The situation on the cyber front
In the annual “ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study 2023”, 14,865 cybersecurity professionals were surveyed online. As a result, 61% of respondents from Germany are concerned about the security of their company or organization due to the many challenges. 62 percent even say that the current threat situation is the greatest in the last five years. This was confirmed by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) at Transform 2024 on March 6, 2024.
Across the board, half of all respondents believe that their company does not have the appropriate tools and employees to respond to cyber incidents in the next two to three years. Germany is also the only country in which cuts were made in the area of cybersecurity in 2023. Some German companies want to outsource cybersecurity in order to save money.
But is this the right approach, because even the best IT system houses are no guarantee against cyberattacks. Some of them were hacked themselves in 2023, such as the IT service providers Adesso, Materna, Südwestfalen IT and Netgo.
Cybersecurity times two
If you want to outsource your IT security, you should always remember: trust is good, control is better. In the event of a cyber attack, your company bears the damage — not the IT service provider.
Accordingly, a second pair of eyes is definitely relevant — and nothing unusual. This can be seen in quality assurance, for example: the “four eyes” principle is a firmly established system for critical processes — after all, the aim is to reduce errors and find gaps.
In the area of cybersecurity, this second pair of “security” eyes is the DEFENDERBOX. This cybersecurity tool scans the network infrastructure, all applications, data and user identities and access for security gaps and vulnerabilities. These comprehensive penetration tests (pentests) show which security mechanisms and measures are (still) required to achieve the desired or required level of protection for your company.
