Biggest cyber threat for companies

Data breaches are the biggest concern

Particularly worrying for companies are Data breacheswhich were mentioned by over 60 percent of respondents. Attacks on critical infrastructures and assets follow closely behind with 57%. The clear lead of seven percentage points underlines the growing importance of cyber security.

Business interruptions firmly in 2nd place

With 31% of responses, business interruption (BI) remains the second biggest risk, both in Germany and globally. For a decade, business interruptions have been either number 1 or 2 in the ranking. They are often the result of events such as cyber attacks or natural disasters that cause lasting disruption to business processes.

Examples from 2024 show why companies see BU as such a threat:

  • Houthi attacks in the Red Sea led to significant supply chain disruptions as container ships had to be diverted.
  • The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore had a direct impact on the local and global flow of goods.

Global supply chain disruptions occur on average every 1.4 years and remain a constant risk.

Natural catastrophes in 3rd place

At 29%, natural disasters remain the third-largest risk — both worldwide and in Germany. In 2024, insured losses once again exceeded the USD 100 billion mark. Particularly dramatic events such as storms and floods in Spain and Central and Eastern Europe show the increasing consequences of climate change.

In countries such as Greece, Japan and Turkey, which were affected by severe natural disasters, these risks even rank first.

Political risks and violence: slight decline

Despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, political risks and violence slip to 9th place in the global ranking (2024: 8th place). In Germany, however, they remain more present at 6th place. While large companies continue to rate this threat highly, smaller companies now rate it as less urgent (10th place).

Conclusion

The results show that companies will need to be particularly prepared for cyber attacks and business disruptions in 2025. Proactive measures such as cyber security solutions and robust contingency plans are crucial to minimize business risks. In addition, natural disasters and geopolitical tensions remain challenges that need to be continuously monitored and strategically addressed.
