Google removes 2.36 million dangerous apps

Google deletes apps

AI becomes a game changer

Millions of new apps are uploaded to the Google Play Store every year. But not all of them are harmless. In 2024, Google removed 2.36 million apps because they violated security guidelines or endangered users.

This is a significant increase: in 2023, there were 2.28 million, compared to 1.5 million in 2022. In addition, 158,000 developer accounts were blocked for attempting to spread malware using fraudulent methods.

Artificial intelligence as the key to security

Google is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to identify and remove malicious apps more quickly. In the meantime, 92 % of all app scans are carried out by AI - with noticeable success. This not only enables more threats to be detected, but also prevents dangerous apps from entering the Play Store directly.

In addition, Google:
✅ 1.3 million apps prevented from requesting unnecessary permissions - an important step towards protecting sensitive user data.
✅ The Play Store guidelines have been further tightened to identify fraudsters more quickly.

Despite improvements: Risks remain

Even though Google is using AI to filter more and more threats, malicious apps are still a risk. Cyber criminals are constantly developing new methods to circumvent security mechanisms. Companies in particular are at risk, as mobile devices are increasingly being used as a gateway for attacks.
